Subgiant:
subgiant is about sound, it's about being on stage and
feeling that push of energy from the PA, it's about the
cavernous depth of a bassline against the scratch of vinyl.
It's about sound and movement, making people move, in their
minds or on their feet.
Subgiant were formed four years ago as a four piece dub
band, but then the electronics took over and subgiant was
reduced to two, Olly on samplers, synths, electronics, guitar
and bass, and Dan on decks, scratching, effects and samplers.
And now it's growing again, with the addition of Tushar
bringing live drums back to the mix, albeit the most cyber
looking drums you'll see. The sound still has a dub element
but inspiration from the breakbeat scene and the trance
scene has become a prominent feature of the subgiant sound.
Taking samples from a myriad of sources and patching it
all together live with beats, breaks, bleeps & beeps,
pads, filters, loops, effects, sub bass, dub bass, acid
bass, ambience, echoes, lo-fi, hi-fi, strings, pings, bells
& dings, four to the floors, reggae riffs, oscillators,
compressors, reverb, squelches, blips, stabs & hits,
it all comes together…and the crowd goes wild.
2002 saw the release of subgiant's debut album "Growth".
This is available via the online shop where you'll also
find the new album "Advances in Twig Technology"
released August 2003. But it's live that subgiant really
work, listening to them on CD just isn't the same. They
have played gigs at festivals, clubs, live venues, pubs
and fields and recently done a session for the BBC in London.
See the gigs page for dates.
